Well, hello there! My name is Steve. I live in Southern California.
So here’s the deal: There are a million blogs about how to get fit, featuring impossibly ripped human beings. There are a million blogs about fashion, featuring gorgeous people dressed in gorgeous clothes that cost gorgeous money. There are a million blogs about how to eat better. But, as far as I’ve seen, there are none about how to put it all together without being selfish or materialistic.
That’s where this blog comes in. You see, the key to fitting wonderful things into a busy life is simplicity. Learning to be efficient. You must be able to know how to pursue the beautiful f’s (fashion, fitness, food, fun) without wasting time and money. In the long run, you want to spend those resources pursuing the most beautiful f’s (faith, family and friends). As the sign says, the best things in life aren’t things.
This blog is about that search for beauty while maintaining a simple life. For example, when it comes to food, we’ll talk about how to cut through all diet clutter and find a reasonable, simple, sustainable way of eating. Also, this blog will dispel the notion that it’s impossible to eat healthily without spending hours over a stove preparing meals. I lost 35 pounds 7 years ago, and have kept it off ever since. And I have eaten out every single day. There is a way to do it. The point is, simplify the process.
A feature I think you’ll enjoy are the Simple Eye Awards™. These awards are given to restaurants, purveyors or places that find a balance between beauty and simplicity. They are all excellent without being extravagant or pretentious. For example, one winner will be an online retailer where a guy can pick up an absolutely beautiful
silk tie for 19 bucks. That’s right–$19!! There are hamburgers that cost more than that, and they’re devoured in 15 minutes. I’ll also tell about a place where you can snag a gorgeous, indestructible bracelet for $5!! And I’ll take you to a Julia Child-hailed restaurant that’s priced like a fast food joint.
Now, it’s not like I know everything. More than anything, this blog will be about learning from my mistakes. I’ve done the leg work so you don’t have to.
A couple of notes: You’ll find that most of the style advice pertains to guys. There are a couple of reasons for that. One is that, well, I’m a man (most of the time). Also, some American men tend to be, uh–how can I put this nicely–slobs. I fear that wasn’t nice enough. So, whether you’re a man or love a man, this blog will provide great style advice. In the future, I hope to add a female style correspondent so that the ladies will get their props.
Also, since I’m based in Southern California, most of the restaurants featured here will be Southern California restaurants. But the principle will be the same anywhere–look for uncompromising quality without pretension. And if you know of restaurants in your area that fit that bill, please let me know. Someday I might visit and include them here!!
Anyway, thank you so much for joining me on this wonderful journey.
Much love, Steve
