“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” Ol’ Charlie D must have been thinking about my past week. I enjoyed a few beautiful days in luminous Santa Barbara, full of amazing food and drink. But my diet and training regimen took a beating in the process. I don’t regret a single minute.
MONDAY AND TUESDAY
Went for a swim in the pool at gorgeous Pacifica Suites hotel. I love kids, but not in my pool. So I was happy there was no one in the water when I arrived, and I suspect I was thrashing about so wildly that I scared off anyone else. Anyway, I swam about 50 laps each day, which took about half an hour. Then I floated on my back and gazed into the cobalt Santa Barbara sky, the occasional water fowl cruising by on their way to the Pacific. It was glorious.
Back home. No pools or water fowl. Actually, I was kind of glad to get back to Crossfit. Especially since the workout of the day included an old favorite of mine–bench presses. Before Crossfit, I worked out at a “globo gym,” full of machines and treadmills. In those days, the workout for most guys consisted of grunting loudly while bench pressing a few reps, and then sitting for about 5 minutes between sets. Now, I wasn’t very good at that either. But at least it was familiar, unlike the cleaning, jerking, snatching and squatting I’m doing now.
Anyway, I was glad to see 5 sets of 5 bench presses on the workout menu on Wednesday. I was only able to get to 145 pounds, but my grunting game was still solid.
Afterward, we did this:
5 wallballs, 5 toes-to-bar, 10 wallballs, 10 toes-to-bar, 15 wallballs, 15 toes-to-bar, etc. for 15 minutes. I was working on my first set of 30 wallballs when time ran out. Grueling.
Here’s what wallballs and toes to bar look like:

This was kind of a “light” week for me. No heavy lifting, for the most part. On second thought, I did lift some pretty heavy food.
So it was a Tale of Two Cities for me this week–Montclair and Santa Barbara. Not quite London and Paris, but it’ll have to do for now.
