Remember when Burger King proclaimed that you can “Have it your way?” Unfortunately, if you wanted your hamburger to taste good, then you definitely couldn’t have it your way at BK. Now, however, burger joints like The Counter breathe new life into that slogan.
For never in history have there been so many ways to personalize your dining experience. The Counter offers such a dizzying array of ways to adorn your hamburger, you may want to take the menu home and study it to prepare for eating at the restaurant. As you can see below, The Counter offers so many options I couldn’t fit them all in my camera lens.
I mean, there are thirteen kinds of cheese! You can have a crab cake burger! And, best of all, you can enjoy a guilt-free, delicious hamburger that doesn’t include a fat, food-coma-inducing bun. They really mean it when they say the protein can be styled with fresh greens. The organic mixed greens, in particular, are always soft, and taste as though they were picked moments before they arrived on your plate.
As for the sauces, I would wholeheartedly recommend the sweet Sriracha and the spicy tomato jam. I usually get both. I would also recommend spending an extra buck or two to add avocado, applewood smoked bacon or sautéed mushrooms. Or all three! Of the side items, I’ve only tried the sweet potato fries, and they are excellent.
So, here’s what I usually do. I start by choosing the all natural beef, done medium rare to preserve the flavor. I have tried the organic bison, and it’s slightly healthier and delicious, but, since I’m still a poor black man, I save the four bucks. The beef’s just as good. I find that 1/3 pound is plenty, considering all the food I’m going to add. I then choose the organic mixed greens. I promise, you won’t miss the bun, and your waistline will thank you. I get the gruyere cheese, which has a mild, smoky flavor. As I mentioned above, I get both the sweet Sriracha and tomato jam, and dip my greens and beef into them instead of pouring them on top. I always top the burger with grilled pineapple (free!!). I round out the burger with dill pickles and sautéed mushrooms or bacon, and voila! I’ve created a perfect meal.
Sometimes, they have specials. If you’re there on a week where they have the lamb burger, jump on it with both feet! That’s the one in the featured image.
When you think about it, there aren’t many times in an adult’s life when you can “have it your way.” Take advantage of those rare, precious occasions where you can.
